Hearing Aids Styles

The table below describes the five common styles of hearing aids which help improve mild to moderate hearing losses. But, as the manufacturers we represent point out, if your type of hearing loss is more severe, your choices can be limited. They also emphasise that while size is the most obvious difference between the aids, each one actually has different attributes that you will need to take into consideration.

OTE

On-The_Ear hearing aids are light weight instruments with a micro-thin tube and tiny ear bud for ultimate discretions.

OTEs are appropriate for mild to moderate high frequency hearing loss.

With soft, flexible earbuds and an extra-small casing, the on-the-ear model is light and comfortable.

BTE

Behind-The-Ear hearing aids are the largest models and can house a variety of circuit options and amplify sounds to a greater degree than most custom models.

BTE instruments have a plastic casing that rests behind the ear and houses the device's technology. A clear plastic tube then directs amplified sound into an earmold inside the ear canal.

ITE

In-The-Ear hearing aids house a variety of circuit options in a custom-made shell. Its size and easy-to-use controls may also be helpful for people with limited dexterity.

Smaller, in-the-ear instruments house their technology components in a custom-formed earmold that fits within the outer portion of the ear.

ITC

In-The-Canal hearing aids are custom designed to fit in the ear canal. ITC instruments offer a variety of circuit choices that would have previously required a larger aid.

In-the-canal instruments are smaller still, featuring an earmold that fits down into the ear canal and a smaller portion that faces out into the outer ear.

CIC

Completely-In-The-Canal hearing aids are custom designed to fit entirely in the ear canal. CICs are popular for their aesthetic appeal, but the physiology of some individuals' ears may make the style unsuitable for them.

These devices fit completely in the canal. Only the head of a tiny plastic line—with which you insert or remove the instrument—shows above the canal.

Destiny CIC

According to the manufacturers, factors to consider in choosing the right kind of hearing aid style and size for your use include:

1. Degree of hearing loss

2. Listening requirements

3. Ear shape and size

4. Ability to handle instrument and controls

5. Lifestyle needs.

You should seek the guidance of your hearing specialist or audiologist in taking your decision on which hearing aid to acquire.
